Relative Humidity

Description and comments

The heat index is an attempt to quantify the combined effect of temperature and humidity. It is a subjective estimate and cannot take into account all the variables that affect the impact of hot weather, such as body size and shape, clothing, wind, sunlight, etc.

However, it does provide a simple way of alerting people about dangerous conditions. Here are the warnings levels for the heat index:

Heat IndexNotes
80-90Caution - fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and activity
90-105Extreme caution - sunstroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion are possible
105-130Danger - sunstroke, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion are likely; heat stroke is possible
over 130Extreme danger - heat stroke or sunstroke are likely with continued exposure

Note: Up to 15 degrees should be added for the effects of direct sunlight.

The formula was derived from a statistical analysis of a survey asking people how hot they felt under different temperature and humidity conditions. This is the formula, where T is the temperature and R is relative humidity: Heat Index = -42.4 + 2.0T + 10.1R - 0.2TR - 6.8x10-3T2 - 5.4x10-2R2 + 1.2x10-3T2R + 8.5x10-4TR2- 2.0x106T2R2. (The constants have been rounded off here.)
